The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are a living tribute to the Ecke family’s long-standing legacy in California’s flower industry. For generations, the Eckes helped shape North County San Diego into a hub for floriculture, and The Flower Fields stand as a vibrant extension of that heritage.
The story of the ranunculus fields began in the 1920s, when horticulturist Luther Gage introduced the colorful flower to the region. Decades later, grower Edwin Frazee moved his ranunculus operation to the coastal hillsides of Carlsbad, where he cultivated the brilliant Tecolote ranunculus variety still grown today.
Now spanning 55 acres, The Flower Fields operate as a working farm and seasonal attraction under the continued stewardship of the Ecke family with Mellano & Company as their growing lead for the ranunculus. Each spring, thousands of visitors come to explore its bursting blooms, themed gardens, family-friendly exhibits, wagon rides, and more—making it one of Southern California’s most iconic flower destinations and a celebration of the region’s agricultural roots.
